Tradition
Donation-funded 10-day courses taught with S. N. Goenka's recorded instructions, in the line of Sayagyi U Ba Khin, at centres in Nepal and worldwide.
S. N. Goenka's Vipassana is taught on residential courses of at least ten days, using Goenka's recorded instructions and evening talks, and it is paid for only by donations. In September 2026 dhamma.org's worldwide directory listed 272 centres and 135 non-centre course sites in over 100 countries and territories. About 20 of those centres are in Nepal, where a course is usually called a शिविर (shivir, a camp).
This page describes the tradition and how its courses work. It does not teach the technique: that happens on a course, under a teacher the tradition has authorised.
Ledi Sayadaw (1846–1923), a scholar monk, taught the Abhidhamma, Buddhism's analytical texts, to lay people and helped revive meditation in Burma, where it was not widely practised at the time. One of his lay students, Saya Thetgyi, went on to teach, and Spirit Rock credits him with starting the first meditation centre in Burma that was not a monastery.
Sayagyi U Ba Khin (1899–1971) learnt from Saya Thetgyi. He was a government accountant who became Accountant General of Burma in 1948, and in 1952 he opened the International Meditation Centre in Rangoon (Yangon), where he taught lay people, foreigners among them.
S. N. Goenka (1924–2013) was born and raised in Myanmar in a family of Indian descent. He trained with U Ba Khin for 14 years, then settled in India and began teaching in 1969, with a first course in Bombay (Mumbai). He taught abroad from 1979. To meet demand he began appointing assistant teachers: dhamma.org dates this to 1982, while the Global Vipassana Pagoda's history says 1981.
In Nepal, the Nepal Vipassana Center, Dhamma Shringa, about 12 km north of Kathmandu, was founded in April 1981, after years in which Nepali students travelled to Goenka's courses in India. More in Vipassana in Nepal: a short history.
Students arrive on Day 0, hand in phones and other devices, and the course opens that evening. Ten full days of meditation follow, and the course ends early on the morning of Day 11, so it spans 12 calendar days, and students agree to stay for all of it.
The day runs from a 4 am wake-up bell to lights out at 9:30 pm. It holds about ten hours of meditation, three one-hour group sittings in the hall and a recorded evening discourse by Goenka. New students keep five precepts, which on a course include no sexual activity at all; old students keep eight, including no food after midday. Noble silence lasts until Day 10, men and women are kept apart, and reading and writing are set aside.

dhamma.org describes Vipassana as "observing sensations throughout the body, understanding their nature, and developing equanimity by learning not to react to them". On the course, attention moves through the body in order, part by part. The discourses warn students not to chase any particular kind of sensation: the point is equanimity towards all of them, pleasant or unpleasant, and seeing for oneself that they arise and pass away (anicca).
In Goenka's explanation, mental impurities such as anger show up as sensations in the body, and blind reaction to unwanted experience is what makes life tense and unhappy. Observing sensation without reacting is meant to break that habit where it starts.

dhamma.org calls the technique non-sectarian. It says that Vipassana is the essence of what the Buddha taught but not a religion, that there is no question of conversion, and that people of many faiths have taken courses without finding a conflict with their own beliefs.
The course still has Buddhist forms. On the first evening students take refuge in the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha, take the precepts, and accept the teacher's guidance for the length of the course. In the Day 10 discourse Goenka tells students that taking refuge did not convert them from one organised religion to another.
Courses run only on dāna, voluntary donations. There is no charge for the teaching, the food or the room. Donations are accepted only from people who have completed at least one 10-day course in this tradition, and a first-time student may give at the end of the course, towards a future course for others. No amount is suggested.
Teachers and organisers are not paid. dhamma.org says teachers receive no payment or material benefit and must have their own means of support. Students who have completed a course can come back to serve on later ones as unpaid volunteers, an arrangement the tradition calls Dhamma service.
During a course, all other meditation techniques are set aside, together with prayer, worship, religious ceremonies and religious objects. The Code of Discipline says this is not a judgement on other practices but a way to give Vipassana a fair trial on its own. In the Day 1 discourse Goenka goes further and warns that mixing techniques is dangerous.
The rule continues after the first course. The Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta course, old-student self-courses and volunteer service are open only to students who have not practised any other meditation technique since their last course, and the longer 20- to 60-day courses ask for years of regular practice in this technique. The application form asks about other techniques, so anyone who also practises in another tradition, such as Mahasi noting, should say so.
The Vipassana Research Institute (VRI) was set up in 1985 at Dhamma Giri, the tradition's centre at Igatpuri, about 136 km from Mumbai. It studies the sources and applications of the technique and publishes Goenka's talks. It has printed the Pāli texts of the Sixth Buddhist Council (the Chaṭṭha Saṅgāyana Tipiṭaka) in Devanagari script and runs residential Pāli courses. The Global Vipassana Pagoda at Gorai, in north Mumbai, was built between 1997 and 2008 as a replica of the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, in gratitude to Myanmar for preserving the technique. Its stone dome stands without pillars; the hall beneath it is 280 feet (about 85 m) across and seats about 8,000 people, and the pagoda is 325 feet (about 99 m) high.
dhamma.org says a course is not a treatment or therapy and that old symptoms may resurface during or after it. It does not recommend courses for people with significant mental health issues, and asks applicants to describe their physical and mental health on the form.
In 2024 the podcast Untold: The Retreat, from the Financial Times and Goat Rodeo, reported on students who had serious mental health crises, including psychosis, after Goenka courses. It questioned how applicants are screened and said that distressed students had been told to keep meditating and discouraged from leaving. In a written response, the director of a centre in British Columbia said the courses are not for everyone and that centres take students' safety extremely seriously. The course builds concentration with about three and a half days of breath observation, not the deep absorptions called jhāna, and then turns to insight. Spirit Rock's history of the lineage groups U Ba Khin's method with Mahasi's as ways of observing impermanence directly without first attaining jhāna. Every centre has a schedule page on dhamma.org with an online application. Each centre handles its own applications and enquiries; a reply can take up to two weeks, and accepted students must confirm their place.
In Nepal, np.dhamma.org lists the centres. They include Dhamma Shringa in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, Dhamma Jananī in Lumbini, and centres in Pokhara, Kirtipur, Chitwan and Birgunj. Course languages vary by centre: Dhamma Shringa asks for fluency in Nepali, English, Hindi or Newari.
