Vipassana centres in Nepal: phone numbers, emails and websites

Nepal has 22 Vipassana centres: 20 in S. N. Goenka's tradition, spread across all seven provinces, and 2 in the tradition of Mahasi Sayadaw. The table at the end of this page gives each centre's phone number, email and website as the centre publishes them.

For most courses you apply online, not by phone. Use the numbers for questions: directions, a course you have already applied for, or the few courses that are booked through an office.

How to apply for a course

For centres in S. N. Goenka's tradition, choose a centre and a course date on np.dhamma.org or the centre's own page on dhamma.org, fill in the application form, and wait for a confirmation. The two centres in the Mahasi tradition, Panditarama Lumbini and the International Buddhist Meditation Center in Kathmandu, take bookings directly. Contact them through their own websites.

The Kathmandu city office

The Nepal Vipassana Center runs a city office at Jyoti Bhawan, Kantipath, in central Kathmandu. Students on the regular 10-day courses at Dhamma Shringa register there, and a chartered bus takes them to the centre at Budhanilkantha on the day the course starts. Dhamma Shringa's schedule asks you to book short courses for old students, and children's and teenagers' courses, by contacting this office.

Which centre is closest?

Most people start at the centre nearest home. Around Kathmandu there are four open to the public: Dhamma Shringa at Budhanilkantha, the oldest (founded in 1981); Dhamma Kitti at Kirtipur; Dhammāgāra at Godawari; and Dhamma Nibhā at Kakani, just outside the valley. Lumbini has Dhamma Jananī, in the monastic zone near the Buddha's birthplace. Pokhara, Chitwan, Birgunj, Itahari, Ilam, Tansen, Dang, Surkhet, Kanchanpur, Kapilvastu and Lukla each have one.

Some centres are not for a first course. Dhamma Āsaya runs courses inside Nakkhu prison and is not open to the public; Dhamma Ādhāra at the Anandakuti Vihara in Swayambhu holds courses mainly for monks. Dhamma Dhāma at Hetauda and Dhamma Gāma near Ramgram are still being set up. The table marks the prison centre and the two new ones.
